The city, which was once described as sitting at “the heart of pro-Trump evangelical Christianity,” by the New York Times, has a long history of voting Republican, until now.
In the 2020 election, Lynchburg City, which has a population of around 80,000, voted Democrat with 48 percent of the vote going to Joe Biden, and 46 percent of the city’s vote going to Trump, according to the Virginia Department of Elections. The race was close, however, with Biden winning the majority by 750 votes.
