Did Canadian Troops Burn Down the White House?

No.

But let’s not get too caught-up in Trump’s remarks to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau concerning the burning of Washington D.C. in the War of 1812.  Its slightly more complicated than the pundits make it out to be.

Jeet Heer brings some perspective here.

And Smithsonian.Com also ran a piece on this very issue in 2012.

  1. Sorry for the double post. When I first logged in to WordPress there was no indication that my initial post had registered – so I posted again.

  2. None of the coverage of this story originating from the US (which isn’t much) that I’ve seen appears to shows any awareness of the 20% of Canadians for whom French is their first language. Or that most Québécois(se) have a longer heritage in North America than most other Canadians (or Americans for that matter). I guess I would be foolish to expect anything different. That’s my little bit of trivia for the day.
