A Message to Everyone Getting Tired of Hearing About the Bowling Green Massacre

I have been getting some push-back on Twitter, Facebook, and in the blog comments from folks who are getting tired of the Bowling Green Massacre jokes.  Here is my Facebook response to these people:

For all of you who are getting tired of the Bowling Green Massacre jokes, please cut us historians some slack and try to empathize with us. We live pretty isolated, mundane, and boring lives. We rarely get comedy material like this handed to us on a silver platter. When an opportunity like this arises–an opportunity that allows us to transcend the dusty archive or the basement seminar room–we must take advantage of it. If we as a nation learned anything from the Bowling Green Massacre it is that attacks on personal liberties–even the liberty to post bad history jokes on social media– is downright un-American. 🙂

  1. well, actually, the levity that ensued over the “massacre” today was a welcome relief….laugh-out-loud, clever stuff posted all over facebook this morning…and that victims fund page that linked to the ACLU was genius! many of us had a rip-roaring good time……so, carry on, and keep up the good work!
